From 4 to 10 May 2025, representatives from The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Zambia proudly participated in the Africa Regional Conference, hosted in Kenya under the powerful theme: ‘Taking a New Bearing’.
Representing Zambia were Board Chairperson Mr. Martin Matabishi and National Director Mr. Twaambo Chikoye, who joined colleagues from across the Africa region to engage in meaningful dialogue, strategic planning, and celebration of the Award’s impact on the continent.
Key Highlights from the Conference
This year’s conference was divided into two key events:
Africa Regional Conference (5–7 May)
Held at the Voyager Beach Hotel in Nyali, Mombasa, the Conference was honoured by the presence of key global and regional figures in the Award community:
- Mr. Martin Houghton-Brown, Secretary General of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation
- Mr. Muhoho Kenyatta, Africa Regional Advisory Board Chair and International Trustee of the Foundation
- Minister for Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy of Nigeria, who also serves as International Council Chairperson of the Foundation
The event sparked discussions on innovation, youth engagement, and the path forward for the Award in Africa.
Bronze and Silver Award Ceremony (9 May)
Taking place at Northlands Grounds in Ruiru, Nairobi, the ceremony celebrated the achievements of Bronze and Silver participants under the Compass Project, a regional initiative aimed at expanding access to the Award for all young people. It was a moment of recognition, unity, and inspiration for all involved.

Milestones
One of the most remarkable moments of the conference was the Presidential Pronouncement by H.E. President Dr. William Samoei Ruto of Kenya, declaring that Gold Award holders in Kenya will now be given precedence in public service recruitment, training, and advancement opportunities. This landmark recognition is a testament to the value of non-formal education and experiential learning.
Looking Ahead: Inspiration for Zambia
The Zambian delegation returns inspired and energized by the strides being made by our regional counterparts. The recognition granted to Gold Award holders in Kenya is a powerful example of how the Award can be elevated at the national level.
We are committed to learning from these developments and working towards similar recognition for Award participants in Zambia. As we continue to expand the Award programme, we remain focused on our mission—to equip young people with the skills, confidence, and resilience to be #WorldReady.
