What is the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award?
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (the Award) is a non-formal education and learning framework supporting young people to find their purpose, place and passion in the world.
In more than 120 countries, our globally recognised accreditation is available to all 14 to 24-year-olds, creating entire generations of innovators and change-makers who are truly world-ready.
To be truly #WorldReady, young people need to know that many of life’s greatest lessons can happen beyond the classroom. The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award gives them the chance to discover exactly that.
How do we do it?
Our participants set their own challenge. With guidance from Award Leaders, each young person is encouraged to examine themselves – their interests, their ambitions, and set challenges for our four Award sections; Voluntary Service, Physical Recreation, Skills and Adventurous Journey.
The Award is comprised of three levels and four sections. Participants complete all four sections at each level in order to achieve their award. At Gold level, participants also complete a residential project.

Our SOCIAL VALUE
Changing lives in the changing world
The social value of the Award, simply put, is the positive impact created by the Award for and through its stakeholders, valued in monetary terms.
Since 2017, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation’s award-winning research team has been working with PricewaterhouseCoopers UK (PwC) to understand the societal level impact of the Award. Together we have developed a robust methodology to measure this. Our pioneering research estimates that in 2022, The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award had an impact of $970 million USD (£762m) of global social value across more than 120 countries and territories.
And with a projected future global social value of $2,513 million (£1,974 m) to be generated through the continued habits of those Award Holders, it demonstrates the significant impact that the Award can have long after a participant has completed their Award.
