Celebrating World Environment Day with 100 Tree Plantings Across Zambia

On June 5th, 2024, participants of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in Zambia came together to mark World Environment Day with a remarkable initiative—planting 100 trees across the country. This significant effort, in honor of the 100th year of our Founder, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, not only highlighted their commitment to environmental stewardship but also emphasized the theme of ‘Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience.’

Supported by The IKOE Foundation, whose steadfast dedication made the initiative possible, award participants from KabulongaBoys Secondary School, Matero Girls Secondary School, Sentinel Kabitaka School, St Ignatious College, Lechwe School, and Hetty Denen Secondary School united in their mission to contribute to environmental sustainability. These young participants planted trees on their respective school grounds with enthusiasm and purpose, demonstratingtheir dedication to combatting climate change and enhancing biodiversity.

World Environment Day served as a poignant reminder of the urgent need to protect and restore our planet’s land resources. Through their collective efforts, the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award participants demonstrated that young people can and must play a pivotal role in addressing environmental challenges. By planting trees, they not only mitigated the impacts of climate change but also inspired their peers and communities to take action.

As we continue to appreciate the environment that we live in, let us commend  young leaders who take a proactive stance to sustainability. Their actions resonate beyond mere tree planting, they embody a spirit of responsibility and empowerment that is crucial for building a resilient and environmentally aware society.

Moving forward, the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in Zambia remains committed to nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards. By engaging young people in initiatives that help save our planet, we empower them to become agents of positive change in the fight against climate change and environmental degradation.

Join us in applauding these remarkable participants and their contributions to World Environment Day. Together, let’s continue to advocate for a sustainable future where every action, no matter how small, contributes to the greater good of our planet and honors the legacy of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.
