When Immaculate, a Grade 10 student at Holy Cross Girls Catholic Secondary School in Mongu, first heard about The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, she didn’t hesitate to sign up. For her, the program was more than just a new activity—it was an opportunity to discover her strengths and step outside her comfort zone.
While some of her peers were skeptical, questioning the value of the Award, Immaculate’s curiosity and determination pushed her forward. Encouraged by her Award Leader’s enthusiasm, she set an ambitious goal: to master the art of tomato gardening. What began as a simple project soon became a journey of growth, resilience, and self-confidence.
Conquering Challenges in a Semi-Desert Environment
Taking on tomato gardening in Mongu, a region with sandy soil and frequent water shortages, was no small feat. Immaculate faced numerous challenges, including the need to enrich the soil and combat load-shedding, which disrupted the water supply.
Her parents played a vital role in supporting her efforts, helping her source black soil and providing seeds to kick-start the garden. With their encouragement and her relentless determination, Immaculate turned an inhospitable plot of land into a thriving garden.

Growing Beyond the Garden
As Immaculate tended her tomatoes, her confidence began to bloom alongside them. Previously shy and reserved, she found pride and joy in watching the fruits of her labor flourish. Selling her first batch of tomatoes was a turning point, as she used the proceeds to reimburse her parents for their investment and contribute to her family’s expenses.
Immaculate’s Award Leader remained a steady source of guidance and motivation, ensuring that her academic performance remained strong while she pursued her gardening goals.
A Vision for the Future
Immaculate’s experience has ignited her passion for agriculture and inspired her to dream bigger. She plans to expand her gardening efforts, experiment with other crops, and continue applying the skills she’s learned to other areas of her life.
The Power of the Award
Immaculate’s story is a powerful example of how The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award helps young people unlock their potential. Through perseverance, mentorship, and community support, she has transformed not only her garden but also herself.
Her journey is a reminder that with determination and the right support system, even the most daunting challenges can be turned into opportunities for growth and success.
