DofE Bronze Participant Ventures Into Poultry Farming

Makokwa, a Bronze participant in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award and a Grade 11 student at Holy Cross Girls Catholic Secondary School in Mongu, has taken on a Major Activity that her peers describe as both “dirty” and challenging: rearing broiler chickens. Her inspiring story showcases resilience, determination, and the power of youth empowerment.

How Makokwa Balances Poultry Farming and Academic Excellence

When Makokwa informed her Award Leader of her decision to venture into poultry farming, she received full encouragement. Since then, she has dedicated herself to feeding, administering medicine, and cleaning the poultry house for her chickens. Despite the demanding nature of this activity, Makokwa has managed to maintain her academic excellence.

A check with the Academic Office at Holy Cross confirms that her participation in the Award program has not negatively impacted her studies. She consistently achieves distinctions and earns recognition for her hard work. Makokwa credits her discipline and time management skills for her ability to balance academics and her Major Activity.

“I love this dirty work,” she said unapologetically. “It empowers me, and I’m thankful to my parents for accepting the challenge by buying 200 birds.”

Overcoming Challenges in Poultry Farming

Makokwa’s journey has not been without its obstacles. Power outages, rising chicken feed costs, and even the loss of chicks have tested her resolve. During nighttime power outages between May and July 2024, her parents stepped in to help by purchasing solar panels and charcoal to keep the chicks warm.

“Caring for chicks isn’t easy—it’s an everyday task. You even have to wake up at night to check on them,” she shared. Her hardest moment came when she discovered five of her chicks had died. Selling broilers was also a challenge, as load-shedding made it difficult for customers to buy in large quantities.

Despite these setbacks, Makokwa’s determination has not wavered. Her Award Leader became one of her first customers, a testament to the support she has received throughout her journey.

Future Plans: Expanding to Egg Production

Looking to the future, Makokwa plans to venture into rearing layers, recognizing the high demand for eggs in Mongu. She believes this new venture will be more sustainable, especially given the challenges posed by load-shedding.

With profits from her first consignment of 200 broilers, she was able to buy herself school shoes, a uniform, spectacles, and even assist her parents financially. She is currently working on her second consignment and is optimistic about what lies ahead.

Empowering Stories Like Makokwa’s

Makokwa’s story is a shining example of the empowerment that the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award fosters. Her journey demonstrates that with determination, support, and a willingness to embrace challenges, young people can achieve extraordinary things.
